Dental problems can compromise a horses health and performance, therefore we recommend a dental exam at least once a year. Young horses can have problems wiith caps or impacted adult teeth. Older horses tend to have problems with loose teeth, excessive pressure on the incisors and periodontal disease. Abnormal dental wear can cause an abnormal dental pattern that will get progressively worse with time. Signs to look for that indicate there is a dental problem include: 1. Quidding or dropping partially chewed food from the mouth 2. Excessive salivation 3. Weight loss 4. Resistance to the bit, bit chewing 5. Head tossing, refusal to stop 6.
