Shockwave therapy, officially known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a noninvasive therapy that is commonly utilized to treat musculoskeletal and orthopedic disorders in equine patients. Our unit generates focused shockwaves of varying intensities that can be directed at specific structures within the body. The delivered energy stimulates healing by increasing blood flow and growth factor concentrations in the treated tissues. Treatment sessions take only a few minutes and are generally repeated three times, at two week intervals. The horse is usually sedated for treatment. We commonly utilize this therapeutic modality to stimulate the healing of fractures, injured tendons and ligaments, arthritis, sore feet and sore backs. Results thus far have been very encouraging and this therapy is now in wide use in both human and veterinary medicine.
